A group of 42 Lemberg (Lviv) students and graduates were guests in Vienna from 6-10 May. The main objective of the exchange was the participation in an interdisciplinary scientific lecture programme that was able to be brought about through the coordinated interaction of teachers and students from various Vienna universities.

The following teachers have arranged contributions and teaching events especially for the Ukrainian students: MMag. Stefan Hampl (Faculty of Psychology, University of Vienna), Dr. Elisabeth Olentchouk, Prof. Juliane Besters-Dilger, Prof. Stefan Simonek, Prof. Alois Woldan (Institute for Slavonic Studies, University of Vienna), Prof. August Österle (Institute for Social Policy, WU in Vienna), Mag. Solnyško krug, golubyj vozduch
1

Let us start optimistically: “Za-po-ro-žec! Za-po-ro-žec!”, chants the audience a few hours after midnight on New Year’s Eve. “Za-po-ro-žec”, that was a very nice car, explains the singer of the band Ruskaja before the start of the song — in Austrian with a charming Russian accent! Za-po-ro-žec is then the song’s refrain. The singer, dressed in a red T-shirt with a yellow star, calls on the public to sing along. Some scream, “Boľšoe spasiba!”, some “Charašo!” The only words which they knew in Russian. Early in the morning in the New Year in a Viennese east club. In the vicinity of the south railway station, where the trains “from the East” arrive.

Griechische Türken in Wien
Written by Stefan Hampl
Field Reports arrow Vienna 2006

The social fabric of a football club

Field Reports arrow Vienna 2005/06

Image1) Cognitive interest — the “why”

I have chosen football fans as the group to be researched. However, this concerns fans from smaller, more rural football clubs, where the fans themselves are quite often active in the club in an honorary capacity. Well, why particularly this topic? Since my father has been active as cashier and bookkeeper for ca. 4 years in such a club on an honorary basis and I see the pleasure and enthusiasm he summons up for “his” club, this group particularly aroused my interest.

“Once upon a long, long time ago there was a puppet theatre in a city named Lviv. But when the puppets left the people thought about what they should do with the newly acquired building. Then a very wise man with the resounding name Markiyan Ivashchyshyn had – after he rubbed his nose three times with his forefinger – the stirring idea: “It will be a venue site: A place for various improvisations, where everybody is allowed to and shall try things out!” And so it came about that he and his “Dzyga” club conjured up the LYALKA.”

Prag

City Stories arrow Prague
